Oxford Egg Hunt Fairtrade at St Michaels

Fairtrade at St Michaels has been a hub for all things fair, ethical and sustainable in the heart of Oxford city centre since 2003. Tucked beneath St Michaels church on Cornmarket Street, Fairtrade at St Michaels suffered from the lack of footfall in the city centre over the last two years, and is keen to band with other city centre indies to highlight some of the great businesses Oxford has to offer.

Fairtrade at St Michaels has collaborated with 6 other local businesses to launch the Oxford Egg Hunt. The businesses range from board games to millinery, and food to Fairtrade. Each local establishment will be running their own promotion in the run up to Easter, to encourage locals to shop small in the city this April. Offers include: complimentary chocolate, cupcakes, playing cards or soft drinks with a purchase; or a discount off your coffee, cake and hat!

‘Fairtrade at St Michaels has adapted to every turn of the pandemic; we launched our online shop in response to lockdown, and put in numerous social distancing measures when we opened up. But despite returning ‘back to normal’ we’ve found that footfall in Oxford has dropped dramatically, with people who used to work in the city now working from home. We want to encourage people to support local businesses – to meet in person at a local eatery, or to step into the shops they would normally walk past, and most importantly, to start to re-integrate into their community. I’m hoping that people will discover the joy of ‘in person’ interactions that are not so easily replicated online.

I was thinking ‘how to boost footfall?’, and I figured out that I probably wasn’t alone. So Fairtrade at St Michaels decided to put a call out to other local independent businesses to see if anyone would like to collaborate with us in this Egg Hunt. It’s been extremely heartening to see business owners pulling together to help each other out! The aim is to cross promote to each of our customer bases in an effort to connect to different audiences. It’s surprising how so many Oxford people don’t know about many of these places!’
