Indie Oxford Tips for Easter 2024

 In News

And just like that, it’s Easter… Wasn’t Christmas just yesterday? You know where to pick up chocolate eggs and rabbit ears. But have you thought about other options for Easter?

First, I spoke to Independent Oxford members to know which delicious wine to bring to lunch on Sunday. Then, I got some gift ideas to top it off! >>

The Oxford Wine Company

Here are Emily’s top three favourites to go with a delicious Easter lunch.

Campo Reale Recioto della Valpolicella £18 – A wine that pairs well with chocolate is a rare thing indeed, but this unusual Italian sweet wine really hits the mark. Made from dried red grapes, its flavours of raisins and spice work beautifully with dark chocolate.

Thomas Stopfer Gemischter Satz, Wagram £14.75 – If your Easter meal includes a dish that makes the most of the beautiful green vegetables that are just coming into season, I recommend this bright and zippy Austrian white wine as an accompaniment. A blend of Riesling and Gruner Veltliner, this wine is dry and aromatic, with a gorgeous freshness that feels just like spring sunshine!

Bodegas Mateos Tio Martin Rioja Crianza £20 – Lamb and Rioja go hand in hand, and I can’t think of a better option for a Sunday Roast than this delicious Crianza. Full bodied, rich and deliciously smooth, it really punches above its weight and is bound to please all your guests.

Grape Minds

Grape Minds

Here is Michael’s recommendation this year.

In many people’s minds, Easter lunch is inseparable from roast lamb, and there are classic pairings such as Pinot Noir or Rioja that always make a roast sing. But I’ve gone for something a little different here that in my view works even better – the Domaine des Mailloches Bourgeuil (‘bore-goy’ is a decent approximation to the pronunciation). This wine is made from Cabernet Franc vines over 80 years old, and while older vines produce fewer grapes, the ones that do grow are more powerful, flavoursome and produce more interesting wine. This bottle is full of berry intensity, rich and ripe, with some lovely dark flavour notes and a silky texture, which means if it’s sunny, you can even chill the bottle down a few degrees. It’s something slightly different for your Easter table, but trust me that once you’ve tried it, it will become a fixture on your table whenever you have a roast.Mix 6 price £13.99 , free delivery on 6+ bottles.

Cos Cerasuolo di Vittoria

One of Italy’s hidden gems, this wine from Sicily, Cos Cerasuolo di Vittoria is a true example of great fruit meats amazing wine making! The result is fresh perfumed and above all elegant. It’s the perfect accompaniment to a range of dishes especially new season lamb and spring vegetables.

Abingdon Distillery Wild Oxen Rum

If wine isn’t to your tastes, Jordan recommends trying something a little different…

The Wild Oxen Spiced Rum (£39) tastes of the Caribbean, but it’s made in Oxfordshire. Jordan suggests that you serve it tall over ice with ginger beer to make a Dark & Stormy or pair with a premium cola & lime wedge.
