 In News

The vibrant and much-anticipated Cowley Road Carnival in Oxford is back, and the excitement is palpable as we gear up for a spectacular celebration on Sunday 1st September from 11.30 am to 5 pm. Sarah Connor, Trustee of the Cowley Road Carnival, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported the carnival through its challenges. “The Trustees are thankful for the community’s support and patience as we struggled to raise funds to run the event.  We are so pleased that it is finally happening!” she exclaimed, reflecting the relief and joy of everyone involved.

The carnival has long been a highlight of Oxford’s cultural calendar, and this year is no exception. Despite a tight budget, which has limited the event to one stage and the major procession, the spirit of the carnival remains as vibrant as ever. The Trustees are particularly grateful for the generous support received from Oxford Council, Mini BMW, Brookes University, Pegasus Theatre, Global Carnivalz, Asian Cultural Centre, and Shack Shandy. Their contributions have been crucial in ensuring that the carnival can go ahead.

“We are still actively raising funds through stalls and brochure adverts to meet the partnership funding needed,” added Sarah Conor, highlighting the ongoing need for donations and in-kind support to keep the carnival thriving.

This year’s theme, “Our Nature, Our Future” is a continuation of the 2023 “Mother Nature” underscoring the carnival’s commitment to sustainability and environmental awareness. Artistic Director Pax Nindi, who has been working tirelessly on the Cowley Road Carnival voluntarily for the past two years, is confident that this year’s event will mark the beginning of many more successful carnivals to come.

“Whilst we remain true to our aims of keeping themes that relate to and encourage sustainability in life, we are confident this is going to be a successful carnival and a restart of many successful carnivals to come,” said Pax.

“Apart from the local acts, we are pleased to be hosting the first steelband to come to the UK for the Festival of Britain—Nostalgia Steel Band.”
