10 Festival Style Tips

 In Inspiration

Festival fashion has undergone a revolution. When the sub trend first established itself some years ago now, the focus was on boho details and floral dresses. Now, fresh influences from cat walks, street style and modern makers impact on the latest festival looks.

Today on the blog, I’m looking at what to wear to some of our favourite local and indie festivals this year; from hot colours, practical style tips and statement accessories.

Crochet

Crochet garms are big this year. Instagram was awash with a whole host of colourful crochet pieces at Coachella this year, including hot pants and crop tops. However, if you’re planning on visiting a festival a little bit closer to home, you might want to think about layering up, there are some awesome crochet jumpers and cardis on the market.

If you’re planning to go all out with your festival look this year, Boomtown is the place to be. Dressing up and being part of the town community are a big part of the festival ethos. This independent festival has a big emphasis on immersive entertainment, so along with the bands, you’ll find street performances at every turn and whole areas themed with shops, bars and stages. There is the western themed Copper County, the Town Centre with a Christmas themed job centre alongside the futuristic Bang Hai Towers and Sector 6 districts. Check out the Boomtown website galleries for a whole host of festival style inspiration.

If you want to personalise your look to create something unique for your festival wardrobe, I’m running an A Rosie Life Crochet Granny Squares Workshop on 12th June where you can learn the skills to make your very own crochet festival accessories.

Go West

Think fringing, cowboy boots, and even hats with a modern twist. Colourful embroidery and embellishments take this all American look to the next level this year, and make a great festival look, plus boots and a hat are practical festival essentials in anyone’s book! Team an embellished denim jacket with a saddlebag and you’re good to go.

Another festival for channeling your inner festival child is Wilderness. This is a seriously stylish festival so twin your cowboy boots with a sequin leotard and you’ll be right at home. Check out Smoking Gun Vintage who will have a stall at Wilderness & Truck festival this year, selling a whole host of awesome sparkly festival garb and these awesome Frida Kahlo embellished denim jackets. Tag us in your pics if you managed to snag one!

Glitter Alternatives

With many festivals banning glitter this year, it’s time to think about other ways to add some sparkle to your festival look. Many festivals have a fancy dress theme, or at least a style of music you can use to inspire your style. Use eco friendly face paints, and take headbands, earrings and accessories with you to create your festival look.

If you are keen to be part of a community led event that promotes environmentally friendly living, Tandem Festival on the 22nd to 24th June holds eco-friendliness and inclusivity are at the heart of their festival. They encourage low-carbon transport to the festival, avoid non-recyclable waste, up-cycle everything they can, and only serve veggie/vegan ethically and locally sourced food.

Wellies

No festival outfit is complete without a pair of wellies in the UK. Cute sandals and flip flops might be OK in California, but the chances of you seeing all four seasons in one day at a UK festival are high. Leave your Hunters at home though and bag yourself a cheap and cheerful pair. Never take anything of high or sentimental value with you to a festival, just in case your tent gets broken into.

Rainbow Colours

What could be more uplifting than a rainbow of colours, perfect for making a joyous statement in the fields this summer. Whatever the weather, pile on the colours and you’re sure to bring your own sunny, happy vibes.

Truck Festival from 20th to 22nd July, has an awesome line up of sunny indie music this year to team your rainbow look with. Friendly Fires album ‘Pala’ is brimming with dreamy island inspired tunes like ‘Hawaiian Air’ and the sunny vibes are sure to fill the site with Circa Waves hit ‘T-Shirt Weather’.

If you’re looking for some rainbow inspired pieces for festivals, check out Aspire Style on the High Street in Oxford. We love this Rainbow Jumper, perfect for cool evenings under the stars.

90s Sunglasses

The easiest way to add some festival style to your look is a pair of sunnies, and this year 90s frames are a big look. Think big oval shades, class aviators with coloured mirrored lenses, small round metal frames, yellow washed lenses, and of course the classic cat eye style.

Cornbury Festival holds host to 90s icon Alanis Morissette this year, so if you are keen to indulge in a bit of 90s nostalgia, head to The Great Tew Park on 13th to 15th July, and remember you sunnies.

Tassels & Pompoms

Tassels and Pompoms are a festival accessory staple. Perfect for adding a touch of personalisation to any outfit. Add as a trim to jackets, scarves, and hats or bag a pair of colourful tassel or pompom earrings. If you fancy creating your own statement look for the festival season, join me for my A Rosie Life Pompom Headband Workshop on 15th May at Turl Street Kitchen.

Dresses

Practical and stylish, a summer dress is a must for your festival edit this summer. Easy to don when changing horizontally in your tent, a dress is an easy way to make a festival style statement. Go for something with bold prints or embellish a plain piece for a unique festival look.

This Watermelon Print Summer Dress from Aspire Style is a great festival buy.

Bumbags

Perfect for adding some sparkle and keeping your valuables safe at the same time. The bumbag as undergone a revolution in recent years, becoming a must have festival accessory.

Disco

If you’re keen to max out the sparkly sequin look then you are in luck! Disco is back in a big way. Take the escapism to the extreme and deck yourself in all that sparkles from head to toe. Catsuits, mini dresses, bomber jackets and even wellies get the sparkle treatment this summer.

Common People have an entire day dedicated to disco this year, so if you need an excuse to don your sequins, head to South Park on 26th May for a glittering line up that includes The Jacksons, The New Power Generation and Boney M.
