Every year on New Year’s Day, The Ultimate Picture Palace screens a classic epic to see in the new year. This year, we’re showing Luchino Visconti’s award-winning historical masterpiece The Leopard to celebrate the film’s 60th-anniversary.

Awarded the Palme d’Or (Best Film) at the 1963 Cannes Film Festival, Visconti translates Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s novel into a truly cinematic masterpiece. Amid the social upheavals of 1860s Sicily, an aristocratic family grudgingly adapts to the sweeping social changes undermining their way of life. Sumptuous costumes, stunning battle sequences, and lavish period set designs all make this a historical epic on the grandest possible scale.
