Creating Community and Connections at The Cluster: An Interview with Kevin Jessup

 In Indie Oxford Interviews

In this interview, Kevin Jessup, founder of The Cluster co-working space, shares his inspiring journey from redundancy to creating a vibrant community hub in Oxford. He discusses the challenges and rewards of starting fresh, the importance of fostering connections, and his vision for The Cluster as more than just a co-working space.

Holly Davis: Let’s start at the beginning—how did The Cluster come to be?

Kevin Jessup: Thanks, Holly! It’s been quite a journey. I’ve worked in this building for the past 10 years, so I know it and the area really well. Earlier this year, I was made redundant from my previous role, which was a huge push out of my comfort zone. I couldn’t bear the thought of this space being turned into housing, so I approached the landlords with an idea to transform it into a coworking hub.

I was turning 45 and thought, “If I don’t do something I’ve always wanted to now, I probably never will.” It was one of those now-or-never moments. After visiting some amazing co-working spaces, like Stroud’s SpaceHoppers, I realised this building had massive potential. Its vibe, location, and size felt just right for something smaller, more intimate, and community-driven.

We started converting the space in March and officially opened in July. It was a quick turnaround, but I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved.

Holly: That’s incredible! How have things been since opening?

Kevin: It’s been a slow burn, especially since we launched in the summer when so many people were on holiday but that downtime gave me a chance to figure out our unique selling points and really refine the space.

A big milestone was getting a café set up in the yard.

We partnered with The Meet Point Coffee, who transformed the outdoor area at The Cluster into a Bengal street food coffee shop. It’s been a game-changer it’s a welcoming gateway to The Cluster that’s sparked loads of curiosity about what’s happening here.

Holly: That café sounds like such a standout feature. What else sets The Cluster apart from other co-working spaces?

Kevin: Definitely our size and vibe. Many co-working spaces are either huge or part of larger corporate setups. The Cluster is intentionally smaller and more intimate, which creates a real sense of community.

Most of our members are regulars with dedicated desks, so they’re not just passing through. They build genuine relationships here – chatting in the café or around the tap (we don’t have a water cooler!). After Covid, so many people were craving connection, and The Cluster provides that in a natural, informal way, without the pressure of traditional networking events.

We’re planning a whole calendar of events for 2025. It’s all about building connections, sharing ideas and celebrating local talent.

Holly: You’ve touched on events briefly – can you share more about what’s planned?

Kevin: Absolutely! Craft fairs are a big focus – we’re aiming for two a month in the summer. We’re teaming up with yoga teachers like Gabs Brown for outdoor yoga events and with Indie Oxford members like Mederi Wellness for events which might even include mobile ice baths!

We’re also in talks to host performances by a local theatre company and outdoor cinema nights. Oxford is full of incredible talent, and we want The Cluster to be a space where people can come together to create, connect, and have fun.

Holly: Is the space full now, or are you still looking for members?

Kevin: There’s still some availability. We have hot desks and maybe one or two permanent desks left. We also offer free trial days so people can experience the vibe and see if it’s the right fit for them.

Holly: What motivated you to join Indie Oxford?

Kevin: Running a business, whether as a sole trader or a small company, can feel really lonely and I wanted that sense of camaraderie.

I went to my first Indie Oxford event at Temptations Dessert Lounge in Summertown and it was incredible. In just an hour and a half, I met Stuart from Carvalho Designs, who ended up having a stall at one of our craft fairs. I connected with Hannah from Mederi Wellness and recently tried out her flotation tanks and now we’re planning a collaborative event. I even met a photographer keen to work with us. None of it felt forced; it was so natural.

Joining Indie Oxford gave me a tribe – a group of people who truly understand the ups and downs of running a small business. “And the WhatsApp groups, they’re like Google for independents!”

Kevin’s story is a testament to the power of turning challenges into opportunities and the importance of community-driven spaces. Curious to see what’s happening at The Cluster?
