Today marks the beginning of our #indieNovember challenge! We’ve put together a list of daily prompts to help indies show off their awesome businesses in the run up to Christmas. This is for indie businesses across the world, not just Oxford. Whether you’re bricks and mortar, online, a designer maker or an indie supporter, let’s spread the indie love this month. Independents make our communities richer and more vibrant and unique, which is something we can all benefit from.
Today all you need to do is post this list! >>
Anna and I are passionate about supporting indies, and have built up Independent Oxford over the last 2.5 years to support and promote independent businesses in our city.
With the Westgate opening in October, we feel that it is more important than ever to champion indies in our city, and show that it’s worth exploring the streets outside the shopping centre too. We’re really excited about the increased footfall the Westgate is expected to bring to the city, and are eager to get shoppers to explore The Covered Market and surrounding streets as well.
We could enthuse all day about the importance of supporting independent businesses, wherever you are in the world.
From running our own businesses, and working closely with those around us, we appreciate and acknowledge the risks and challenges starting your own business entails. Independent businesses offer so much to our communities, and often become the heart of the neighborhood, where baristas know your daily coffee order, or shops let you know when something you’d love arrives in store.
Independent business owners care greatly about what they do, the products they create and the services they offer. They want to make YOU happy, not some investment panel.
In a world of homogenised retailing and dining, something that we are all becoming weary of, independents offer you quirkiness and imagination, a creativity that fuels our society. Indies set the bar for creative innovation and with their fleet of foot, they can leap into new trends and ideas at a faster rate that any PLC.
By supporting independents, we are supporting each other, and keeping our neighbourhoods a great place to be part of. Working together, whether that be as indies, or indie supporters, our collaboration makes us stronger and we can feel good about our actions, which in turn increases our own (and collective) happiness. It’s no coincidence that #communitynotcompetition has over 1.5 million uses on Instagram.
Ultimately, in a time of funding cuts and social despondency, by supporting indies, you’re putting money back into your community. For every £1 you spend at an indie, 63p stays in your local economy.
We hope you have fun playing along with our #indieNovember challenge, and discover lots of indies near you in the process!
Love, Rosie xxx
