How To Save Money With Pro-Eco

 In Indie Oxford Interviews

This week I caught up with Matt from Pro-Eco to chat about how he helps independent businesses save money, what it’s like to run an indie business, his favourite Oxford indies, oh and his adorable new puppy!

Tell me about your business & why you decided to set it up.

Pro-Eco Ltd has been around a little while longer than I have. It was my Dad, Steve Wennington, that set it up in 1984. Our focus from the offset has been to take the hassle out of utility management for independent businesses across the UK, saving them time and money to concentrate on the other aspects of their business they enjoy.

Tell me a bit about yourself.

I grew up in Eastbourne, East Sussex but made the move to Kidlington in 2013 so I could spend less time on the road (we help businesses across the UK). Outside of work I love taking my dogs out for walks, travelling, going to concerts or to the cinema. Oh, and I met my wonderful fiancée (Caz)!

Why you are passionate about helping independent businesses?

Independent businesses are at the forefront of innovation and change in any market. It’s important to support those that risk so much to follow their dreams! Independent businesses are really extensions of the people that started them, their quirkiness and uniqueness showcasing the things they really love. It’s also great to introduce businesses to innovative ideas and ways to save money on their energy consumption and prices.

How does Pro-Eco Ltd. help your customers?

To put it simply, we save time and money. I don’t think I’ve ever come across a business owner that enjoys spending their own time sourcing competitive prices for their utilities. Which? currently list 37 electricity and gas suppliers for the domestic market alone, with many more in the commercial market, some of which are more trustworthy than others. Pro-Eco only deal with trusted suppliers that offer a great customer experience as well as competitive prices. We also manage the utilities on our client’s behalf, meaning they no longer deal with call centres when they have a query; we do all the leg work for them!

We deal with electricity, gas, LPG, water, telecoms, trade waste and we’re always looking for sustainable, green technologies that can reduce energy bills even further. The next few years are certainly going to be interesting, especially with battery storage becoming widely available.

A testimonial from Wallers in Summertown

‘Pro-Eco saved us even more than we had hoped for on our energy bills and with very little effort on our part. The regular updates, personal, efficient and professional service was very refreshing considering how confusing energy providers can be.

I have no hesitation recommending Pro-Eco to any business owner/manager wanting to save money to reinvest in their business.’

What’s in it for you?

Problem solving; I love it! I’m fortunate to work in a challenging industry as it’s ever changing, and there’s a lot of good (and bad) competition. There’s always something new to learn, modern technology to test, systems to try… I’m never bored! Part of that is researching renewable technologies so businesses can rely less and less on the grid.

As a business owner, what tips would you give to those starting out on their self-employed journey?

Make sure you have some time to yourself! I’ve made the mistake in the past of feeling guilty about taking some time off. You’ll end up burning yourself out, and you’ll lose productivity and make some awful decisions. Take the time to recharge!

Oh, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

How do you maintain your work life balance?

Time management is huge. I always make sure to make time for friends and family, even to the point of scheduling things to do weeks or months before so that some of my time is spent relaxing and having fun. I work harder during ‘normal’ working hours as I know I’ll be getting a treat later that evening or at the weekend.

What are your favourite Oxford indies at the moment?

The Perch – They’re so friendly! Caz and I have been recognised there as “the ones with the Cookie Monster birthday cake”! Not even ashamed.

Jericho Cheese Company – What more is there to say?

Kazbar – One of my first dates with Caz was at Kazbar, so it’ll always be sentimental to me.

And finally!…….Tell me about your perfect weekend!

That’s quite simple really. A lovely walk with the dogs and my favourite people followed by some great food, drink and music. You can’t really go wrong with that!

Check out Matt’s new addition to his family! (All the heart eyes!)>>
