Saturday 12th October – Saturday 2nd November >> ‘Rustlings – Autumn Days by Catherine Rayner’ @ Sarah Wiseman Gallery

Monday 10:00 – 16:00
Tuesday – Saturday 10:00 – 17:30
Closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays

The award-winning author and illustrator reveals new work in her solo exhibition.

Sarah Wiseman Gallery is delighted to announce Rustlings – Autumn Days by Catherine Rayner a solo exhibition by the award-winning children’s author and illustrator. In her latest collection of work, Catherine has been inspired by the turning of the seasons, when wild creatures are busily preparing for the winter ahead.  ‘I’m hoping to convey a sense of ‘getting ready for winter’, say Catherine.

Visitors can expect to see new paintings and prints inspired by small creatures, searching out fruit and nuts for their winter stores; gathering of grasses and thistledown for their nests before finally hunkering down for the winter.

‘By painting in golds, browns and coppers, and observing animal behaviour over the autumn season, I hope that these new pictures will evoke a feeling of cosiness,’ explains Catherine. ‘The viewer will feel the chill, hear the crunch of leaves underfoot and smell the scent of the season when they are walking around the exhibition, ‘

Using liquid acrylics and silkscreen printmaking, Catherine’s lively and expressive line describes movement whilst playing with scale and space. By placing the animal to one side of the paper, for example, she suggests that it has just strayed into the frame and at any moment might just wander off again. Her silkscreens are made expressively and organically often including up to thirty layers of colour.

Catherine Rayner has written and illustrated over a dozen critically acclaimed, award winning picture books for children, since graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 2004. She is the recipient of the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal (other winners include Sir Quentin Blake, Shirley Hughes CBE and Chris Riddell OBE) She has also illustrated books for Michael Bond, Julia Donaldson, Michael Morpurgo and Ursula Moray Williams.

Catherine has worked with Sarah Wiseman Gallery for over a decade with ‘Rustlings’ her third solo exhibition.

Tuesday 10th December 2019 >> Topsy Turvy (12) – Lesser known Mike Leigh @ Iffley Film Nights – £6

19:00 – 17:30

A notable departure from Leigh’s ‘kitchen sink’ realism and a nominee for BAFTA’s award for Best British film of its year, 2000.

Gilbert and Sullivan musicals divide taste. But this is the story of lyricist W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan at a rocky time in their relationship, following the commercial flop that was ‘Princess Ida.’ Seeped in meticulous Victorian detail, and with Leigh’s familiar cast, Lesley Manville, Jim Broadbent and Timothy Spall among them, this is an engrossing portrait of the creative partnership that stepped back from breaking up and went on to produce ‘The Mikado.’ Leigh
struggled to get distribution for this film but it became known as ‘one of the best movies you might have missed!

Tickets £6 which include a glass of wine, nibbles and convivial companions!
Reserve, with name, film name and number of tickets

Doors open 7pm for 7.30 screening
Iffley Church Hall, Church Way, OX4 4EG
