Angie Lewin ‘Meadow and Shore’ at Sarah Wiseman Gallery @ Sarah Wiseman Gallery
May 4 @ 10:00 am – May 25 @ 5:30 pm
Angie Lewin 'Meadow and Shore' at Sarah Wiseman Gallery @ Sarah Wiseman Gallery | England | United Kingdom

Sarah Wiseman Gallery is proud to announce ‘Meadow and Shore’ a highly anticipated solo exhibition of new prints by Angie Lewin.

Featuring brand-new prints, this will be Angie’s second solo exhibition at Sarah Wiseman Gallery.
She says, ‘The native wildflowers of England and Scotland are the subject of the limited-edition wood engravings, linocuts and screen-prints in this exhibition.

‘From the Outer Hebrides to the North Norfolk coast and places in-between, I depict plant forms against the backdrop of shore, sea and sky. By contrast, the wildflowers and grasses that find their way into my garden also often reveal structures equally as captivating as those of more exotic cultivated species, inspiring sketches which I develop into limited edition prints.  Also included in this selection of prints are studio still life compositions of gathered shoreline finds, wild and garden seed-heads and my collection of often chipped and cracked ceramics.’

Angie Lewin’s printmaking has earned her devoted collectors all around the world. Her keen eye for detail and bold yet delicate style is utterly distinct, as she moves with ease through several printmaking techniques which include lithography, silkscreen and wood-engraving.
Her palette is soft, even muted in tone, but with punches of strong colour, such as with the glossy red rowan berries typically found in the Scottish countryside. With her Norfolk-inspired work, chalkier tones with strong blues are in evidence.

As well as working on editions of her prints, Angie designs textiles for St Judes, the company she runs with her husband Simon. Dividing her time between Norfolk, Edinburgh and Speyside, Angie’s work is very much influenced by her natural surroundings. Angie will spend much of her time outside, sketching and collecting shells, leaves and feathers to add to her still-life.

Exhibition: Makers & Tools @ Arts at the Old Fire Station
May 17 @ 11:00 am – Jun 15 @ 6:00 pm
Exhibition: Makers & Tools @ Arts at the Old Fire Station | England | United Kingdom

Makers & Tools is a collaborative making project exploring the relationship between craft makers and their tools.

The project connects six contemporary craft makers in the early stages of their careers, who undertook a non-verbal conversation through an exchange of objects.

The exhibition and programme of events opens up the conversation and asks: “What happens if a maker doesn’t choose their tools? What if they are gifted a tool created by another maker? What effect does this seemingly benign intervention have on their making process, and what possibilities does this allow?”

Join us to discover the results!

Exhibition opening: Thursday 16 May, 6 – 8pm.

About the project

The Makers & Tools project provides makers with the space and time to take risks in their practice, to explore new ways of collaborative working and to develop skills that will contribute to the success of their careers in contemporary craft.  It provides valuable continuing professional development opportunities for makers in the SW and SE, and makes visible the process of craft to a wider public audience.

Makers & Tools is coordinated & curated by Melody Vaughan. It is funded in part by Arts Council England.

Indie Oxford Meet Up @ The Old Bank Hotel
May 23 @ 9:30 am – 11:30 am
Indie Oxford Meet Up @ The Old Bank Hotel | England | United Kingdom

This month we are joined by Indie Oxford Business Member and Business Coach Penny Tunnell, with a brilliant talk about how finding focus can build your business. >>

The One Thing

Most of us have too much stuff to think about, information overload, too many obligations, a sense of being pulled in different directions or wrung out in the washing machine of daily life!

It doesn’t have to be this way. You can live your life centred by what matters most to you, and still get anything that needs doing, done.

My mantra is the Goethe quotation;

‘Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least’
Thank goodness multi-tasking is out of fashion, and focus is in!

By understanding how to simplify our thinking, so that our true goals comes into focus in any situation, we can create balance, calm and a sense of achievement.

By making what matters, matter
By doing first things first
By focusing on the one thing…that makes the difference

The talk is very much a light touch; nothing heavy, and in a gentle, yet powerful way, will give some tools and tips on managing energy, time and emotions so that you feel empowered and in control, no matter what.

how to listen to your true self, and trust what you hear
how to align personal purpose and values with your work goals
how to create a great mind-set in the workplace
dealing with barriers and distractions
building support networks and the power of influence
motivation and staying on track

Make sure your grab your spot ASAP as this session is sure to sell out fast!

Oxford plant swap at Silvie Cafe @ Silvie Cafe
May 25 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Oxford plant swap at Silvie Cafe @ Silvie Cafe | England | United Kingdom

We are back with the 4th edition of Oxford houseplant swap! This time we are hosted by the wonderful Silvie’s cafe in East Oxford. It couldn’t be easier to take part! Simply bring along a healthy, pest free* houseplant or two, some seeds, some cuttings, or some tiny plant pups and swap them with other houseplant enthusiasts. It’s a great way to discover new plants, as well as new plant pals! Whether you are new to houseplants or have well rooted skills (see what we did there?) we welcome all knowledge levels to come along and get involved. Drinks and snacks are also available to purchase at the venue. (Vegan and gluten free options available)

We have a ticket system in place to hopefully reduce the amount of left over plants – e.g. you bring 3 plants, you get 3 tickets, you can then use these tickets to take 3 plants home.

Our amazing host venue, Silvie, is a lovely cafe that hosts lots of great events such as clothes swaps and a poetry library! You are in for a treat as they provide great coffee and snacks (vegan and gluten-free options available).

*pest free to the best of your knowledge.

FAQs

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

oxfordplantswap@gmail.com, on instagram or facebook at @oxfordplantswap

What is the best way to ge to the venue?

Yes, parking in Oxford sucks, but buses, cycling and piggy back rides are some great alternatives to driving! But seriously, we are all about sustainability and we want to make it as low impact of an event as possible.

To celebrate the spirit of South Park and all the residents who walk their dogs here, our market on the 26th May is going to be a Dog’s Day Out! We will be holding a charity dog contest with prizes for Waggiest Tail, Loudest Bark and Dogs who Look Most Like their Owners, to be judged by the local animal shelter 🙂 . All proceeds from the dog show will go to a shelter, and we may even have adoptable dogs at the market too.

The Oxford Artisan Distillery Monthly Markets:

As an organic, sustainable business that only uses locally grown grain, The Oxford Artisan Distillery would like to support local organisations, artists, individuals, charities, farms and businesses who are doing good things for the community in the form of a monthly farmer’s market.

Our market days feature children’s activities (making sessions, face painting, seasonal craft making activities, gardening activities, etc) as well as food vendors, local bands/music, and a special distillery offering. The market also includes local farm produce and products for sale, and is open to local folks who want to showcase their wares or otherwise get the word out about what they are doing.

Book Club Event with Claire Fuller @ Mostly Books
May 30 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm
Book Club Event with Claire Fuller @ Mostly Books | England | United Kingdom

Claire Fuller’s latest book, Bitter Orange, is published in paperback on 2nd May and we think that it will make a great book club read.   Claire will be at Mostly Books at 7.30pm on Thursday 30th May primed and ready to talk about her book.

Jellico is dying. A man who calls himself the vicar visits, hoping to extract a deathbed confession.

He wants to know what really happened that fateful summer of 1969, when Frances – tasked with surveying a dilapidated country house – first set eyes on the glamorous bohemian couple, Cara and Peter. She recalls the relationship they forged through sweltering days, lavish dinners and elaborate lies, and the Judas hole through which she would spy on the couple. Were the signs there right from the beginning? Or was it impossible to avoid the crime that split their lives open like rotten fruit?

Everyone is welcome – whether you’re already a member of a bookclub or just fancy the idea of a one-off bookclub-style event.    Come along and join in the discussion.

Tickets are £10 and include a copy of the book plus a drink on the night.  Copies of Bitter Orange can be picked up in advance so that you have plenty of time to read the book.
